Eyes are one of the most striking features that Asian women have, and highlighting them with a sexy, smoky eye can only enhance them more. Christopher Drummond, a licensed esthetician and founder of Christopher Drummond Beauty, offers these tips for making your eye makeup sizzle while complementing your unique Asian heritage.
Best color choices: Drummond suggests staying away from very dark colors. Instead, use light to medium colors, like a light beige for your base, on the eyelid, and a mauve or brown for the color closer to your lash line. "A light, shimmery color on the lid helps to open the eye," says Drummond.
To add an additional pop to your smoky-eye look, choose a color that complements your eye color. For example, greens go well with brown eyes and vice versa.
Smoky-eye step-by-step: Once you have the perfect colors, create a smoky-eye look by first applying the light, shimmery beige shadow to the entire eyelid. Next, apply your matte brown or mid-tone shade along your lash line and the outer corner of the lid.
Then blend the shadow upward toward the brow bone. "Asian eyes are usually 'hooded,'" says Drummond. "This means the upper lid hangs down past the crease, and most of the lower lid does not show. Because of this, it is important to create the illusion of a crease by extending out the original crease."
Finally, apply eyeliner on the outer two-thirds of the lash line on the upper lid and halfway across the lower lid, starting at the outer corner.
Liner tips: Drummond suggests you alter your eyeliner technique according to your eye shape for the best smoky-eye effect.
If the hood of your eye goes all the way down to the eyelashes, apply a thin line of liner on the top lash line and a thicker line on the bottom lid. This helps to compensate for not being able to see the top of the eye line.
If you can see the top line of your eye, put very little liner on the bottom lash line and focus on the outer corner of the eye. Then, line the inner eye with white pencil. This technique accentuates the shape of Asian eyes.
